Chair’s Message

As we enter a new decade and reflect upon the past, one cannot help but envision the journey that has led us to 2020. It has been one of hope, inspiration, and an appreciation of the selfless and countless contributions by women in the Municipality of Ottawa who have made and continue to make our city and world a better place for all. Stifled by humility, these women’s tireless commitments often go unnoticed, undocumented and forgotten within a historical context. “A city’s geography ought to reflect its history” and the purpose of this site is to create a virtual public space that documents and recognizes these phenomenal women so that they too are included in Ottawa’s narrative.

Why is this so important? In short, recognizing the outstanding contributions by local women illuminates the value that they bring to Ottawa’s communities, its citizens, and to those less fortunate. And, if this inspires and encourages others, we will have succeeded in making Ottawa a more benevolent, stronger, and embraceable municipality. Equally important is the site’s ability to express our collective appreciation to the countless women for their dedication and drive that have permeated and touched many, if not all, of our lives.

At the same time, we also wish to thank the countless men for their contributions to Ottawa and while this site is dedicated to women we are truly impressed and encouraged by the support that we have received from our fellow citizens. In particular, there are two extraordinary men with vision, dedication, and leadership who began this journey with us who have since departed. We remember and thank Robert Wilson and Lucio Appolloni for their many accomplishments including as champion of the Ottawa Sports Awards and founder of Villa Marconi Long-Term Care Centre respectively.

On a personal note, I wish to express my sincerest gratitude to our team for the endless hours and resilience in bringing this dream to life; to all the individuals who have promoted and shared our initiative with others; and, to those trailblazers who have nominated these extraordinary women so that their stories inspire others and have a place in Ottawa’s history.

None of this would be possible, however, without the assistance and contributions of UIM Ottawa and the Government of Canada’s New Horizons for Seniors Program (NHSP) that have helped turn this vision into a reality. It is with deep appreciation that we acknowledge these proud supporters.

Please join us in this important mission by nominating deserving women so that they too may be reflected as contributing members of our beloved city.
