Maureen Dawson
Women of Inspiration
Maureen Dawson is a dedicated and compassionate community volunteer whose long-standing contributions have strengthened Ottawa’s social fabric through sustained service, quiet leadership, and consistent acts of care. Over many years, she has supported a wide range of non-governmental organizations, demonstrating reliability, initiative, and an enduring commitment to improving the quality of life for individuals and families in need.
Maureen began volunteering with Shepherds of Good Hope while still employed full-time with the federal government. Since then, she has maintained an unwavering weekly commitment, regularly serving Saturday mornings in the kitchen. In this role, she assists with meal preparation, serves clients, and supports clean-up operations. Through this hands-on service, she has developed a deep appreciation for the importance of consistent, dignified access to meals for individuals experiencing homelessness and food insecurity.
For more than twenty years, Maureen has been an active member of the Rideau Trail Association, where she has both participated in and led outdoor recreational activities including hiking, snowshoeing, and cross-country skiing. She has also led guided walks along National Capital Commission trails, encouraging community members to remain active while fostering an appreciation for Ottawa’s natural environment.
Maureen has also made a meaningful impact through her volunteer work with the Ottawa-Carleton Association for Persons with Developmental Disabilities. She has played a key organizational role in coordinating volunteer teams for fundraising initiatives, including seasonal garlic harvesting and site clean-up activities at Silver Spring Farm, as well as holiday gift-wrapping campaigns in local shopping centres. Her steady leadership has helped ensure the success and efficiency of these initiatives, directly supporting essential programs and services.
In addition to her organizational contributions, Maureen is a deeply engaged and supportive neighbour. Having lived in her condominium community for more than three decades, she regularly assists fellow residents by offering grocery support, visiting those who are ill, and helping with everyday tasks. She also supports the Debra Dynes Food Bank by coordinating food drives within her building and personally delivering donations during the holiday season.
Maureen Dawson’s volunteerism is defined by consistency, humility, and care. Her sustained contributions across multiple sectors reflect a lifelong commitment to service and community well-being, making her a valued and respected presence within Ottawa’s volunteer landscape.
