Claudette Cain Coulas is a trailblazing Canadian leader whose career has spanned politics, journalism, the judiciary, and mentorship. With more than four decades of public service and professional achievement, Claudette is widely recognized for her dynamic leadership, commitment to community, and fearless advocacy for women in leadership.
Claudette’s public career began with her election to regional council in 1985. She later made history as the three-term Mayor of Gloucester, one of Ottawa-Carleton’s fastest-growing municipalities before amalgamation. As mayor she was known for her fiscal responsibility, tax reduction policies, and efforts to make government more transparent and accessible. Her practical, no-nonsense approach earned her widespread respect as a strong and effective municipal leader.
After her time in elected office, Claudette transitioned into media, becoming a well-known columnist for the Ottawa Sun, and the host of public affairs programs on Rogers TV and CFRA radio. Her sharp commentary and fearless interviews helped hold public officials to account, while connecting citizens to important civic issues.
In yet another career chapter, Claudette was appointed Justice of the Peace with the Ontario Court of Justice, serving with fairness, empathy, and integrity. Her reputation for being firm but compassionate in court earned her the nickname “Ottawa’s Judge Judy.” She served across Ontario, always willing to lend her expertise wherever needed.
Now retired from the bench, Claudette continues to empower others—particularly women—through coaching, public speaking, and authorship. Her book, Ladies, Take Your Place: Leave Your Mark Politically, Professionally & Personally, serves as a roadmap for women aspiring to careers in politics, business, or leadership. Drawing from her own life experience, Claudette inspires others to lead authentically, with courage and purpose.
“A passionate advocate for mental health, Claudette has openly shared her own struggles and family experiences to help break the stigma of this debilitating disease. From the proceeds of her book, she supports local organizations geared to helping women reach their full potential.
Claudette Cain Coulas has left a lasting mark on the political, judicial, and civic fabric of Ottawa and beyond. She continues to champion the next generation of women leaders, urging them to take their place and leave their own mark—just as she has.
