Women of Inspiration

Kate Rexe is a compassionate and deeply committed community leader whose volunteer service has had a profound impact on women and families experiencing gender-based violence. Through her work with Shelter Movers Ottawa, she has demonstrated exceptional leadership, empathy, and resilience in supporting individuals during some of the most vulnerable transitions in their lives.

Kate began volunteering with Shelter Movers in June 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic, motivated by a long-standing commitment to issues affecting women and girls and a desire to contribute meaningfully during a time of heightened isolation and need. Since then, she has completed more than 85 volunteer moves, providing consistent, hands-on support as a mover, driver, and lead mover.

In every capacity, Kate brings steadiness, professionalism, and compassion to her volunteer work. As a driver, she safely and confidently operates large moving vehicles across the city. As a mover, she provides dependable strength and resilience in physically demanding and time-sensitive environments. As a lead mover, she takes on enhanced responsibility for coordinating logistics, ensuring adherence to safety protocols, guiding and supporting volunteer teams, and upholding a consistently trauma-informed approach throughout each move.

Kate’s leadership is grounded in a deep understanding that each move represents far more than the relocation of belongings—it is a critical step toward safety, dignity, and independence. She communicates with survivors in a way that restores agency, creates calm in moments of uncertainty, and fosters an environment of respect and empowerment. Her ability to connect with clients and volunteers alike helps set the emotional tone of each operation.

Beyond her direct service, Kate plays an important role in strengthening volunteer culture within Shelter Movers Ottawa, fostering collaboration among individuals from diverse backgrounds and experiences. She has also contributed to the development of the organization’s Survivor Speakers Club, helping create space for survivors to share their stories and lead with their lived experience.

Kate Rexe’s volunteer contributions reflect quiet strength, authenticity, and unwavering commitment. Her work continues to meaningfully improve the lives of those she serves while advancing a community grounded in dignity, safety, and hope.
