For over 35 years Betty Hope Gittens has been a dynamic force in Ottawa’s business and charitable communities—an accomplished entrepreneur, respected leader, and dedicated philanthropist whose contributions have left a lasting impact on the city.
Throughout her career Betty has demonstrated a remarkable ability to lead, innovate, and give back. She has held leadership roles in multiple sectors, including as a partner in a human resources firm, owner of two travel companies, and founder of her own successful event planning business. Her professional expertise and commitment to excellence earned her wide recognition, including being named the Ottawa Women’s Business Network’s first “Businesswoman of the Year” in 1983.
Beyond business, Betty’s true passion lies in community service. For more than two decades she has held numerous volunteer leadership roles in the charitable sector, channeling her energy and expertise into meaningful causes. From 2008 to 2022 she served as Co-Founder and Director of The Eldercare Foundation of Ottawa, a charity dedicated to improving the lives of seniors in non-profit long-term care homes. Under Betty’s guidance and stewardship, the Foundation raised and distributed hundreds of thousands of dollars to support essential services, enhance facilities, and uplift the lives of Ottawa’s most vulnerable seniors.
Betty’s selfless dedication, strategic insight, and warmth have been instrumental in building Eldercare from the ground up. Her optimism, kindness, and tireless advocacy have inspired colleagues, partners, and the broader community alike.
Betty’s influence also extends beyond Canada. She has served as an international guest speaker, sharing her entrepreneurial insights and commitment to community development on a global stage. In 2014 she was awarded the Silver Crown of Merit by the Government of Barbados in recognition of her efforts to promote Barbadian culture and heritage in Canada.
